Merriam-Webster ‘s Dictionary defines Prevention as, “the act of preventing or hindering” and the Cambridge Dictionary defines Prevention as, “the act of stopping something from happening or of stopping someone from doing something.” Substance Use Prevention seeks to promote constructive lifestyles that discourage alcohol, tobacco, drug use and overuse.

The North Carolina Substance Abuse Professional Practice Board credentials prevention, treatment and recovery professionals in the State of North Carolina. They offer a Certified Substance Abuse Prevention Consultant Credential. This certification is offered to those persons who frequently are not involved in one-to-one and group counseling with persons who have substance abuse problems. Rather, it is offered to those persons who identify and work with people in high risk categories and/or in alcohol and drug education settings (i.e.: human service agencies, drug and alcohol educators, high school guidance counselors, etc.) For more information.
