Meeting Tomorrow's Challenges Today
Founded in 1990 as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, the Governor's Institute was created to improve how healthcare professionals prevent, identify, and treat substance use disorders through education, collaboration, and evidence-based practice.
More than three decades later, that commitment remains at the heart of everything we do—but our impact has grown far beyond our original mission.
Today, the Governor's Institute partners with healthcare systems, state agencies, universities, professional organizations, community providers, and military and veteran-serving organizations to strengthen North Carolina's workforce and improve the health and well-being of communities across the state.
Through innovative education, technical assistance, workforce development, strategic partnerships, and collaborative initiatives, we help professionals build the knowledge, skills, and connections needed to address today's most pressing public health challenges.
Whether advancing addiction medicine, supporting service members, veterans, and their families, improving maternal and child health, or developing the next generation of healthcare leaders, the Governor's Institute remains committed to one guiding principle: Better prepared professionals lead to healthier people, stronger communities, and a healthier North Carolina.

Life at the Governor's Institute
We're building a workplace where talented people can do meaningful work without sacrificing flexibility.
Most of our team works remotely from across North Carolina, allowing us to stay connected to the communities we serve while supporting a healthy balance between work and life. Our Raleigh office serves as a collaborative hub for team meetings, planning sessions, Board meetings, and partner events.
We believe the best ideas come from diverse perspectives, open communication, and a willingness to work together. If you're looking for a mission-driven organization where your work has a statewide impact—and where you're trusted to do your best work—we'd love to hear from you.
